CHAPTER 23
After dinner Billy and Stephen hurried to the workersâ cabins. They were overflowing with excitement, knowing that when they told Joe all that they had accomplished that day he would be very happy with them. They found him, John, and Ken standing around the campfire in front of Kevinâs shack. The boys were both very proud of themselves and it showed on their grinning faces as they walked up to the campfire to talk to the older man.
âSo what did you two do today?â Joe asked them.
âA lot.â Billy giggled.
âAre we going someplace more private to talk or should we do it here?â Stephen asked.
âI figured that we could take a walk around the encampment and stretch our legs a little. I could use a nice long, leisurely stroll after the day Iâve had,â Joe told them tiredly. As they edged off towards the fence Billy was still giggling.
âWhat has gotten into you?â Joe laughed. âYouâre acting like the cat that just ate the last canary.â
âWait till you see all of the information we gathered today,â Billy said proudly.
âSo what have you got?â Joe asked.
âWe have talked to a lot of people today,â Stephen began. âWe checked the work schedules of all the guards and the staff and we found out where they keep all of the tools at night time.â
âWe also got the key to the toolshed so we have access to it at any time,â Billy said still giggling.
âWow you two have been busy!â Joe exclaimed. âTell me what you know about the schedules.â
âWe can do better than that.â Stephen smiled as he took some papers out of his pocket and handed them to Joe. âWe wrote everything down so you could study it. We have copies of all of this back in our room so we can check the schedules everyday and compare them, then we will know if anything changes.â
âWriting anything down is dangerous!â Joe growled. He jerked the papers out of Stephenâs hand excitedly. Reading through them his anger dissipated quickly and he laughed. âThis is the most information we have had since we got here. You boys have already done more to get these people out of here than me, John, and Ken has done in the six months that we have been in this awful place.â
He began earnestly studying the pages he took from Stephen. âWith this kind of information we will be ready to move next week. I will make contact with my people on the outside tomorrow.â He laughed excitedly. âI will try to smuggle these papers out of the camp in the morning. I will leave them in a special place where my men on the outside will get them. Theyâll look them over and let me know what they can do to help us. Then we can begin to make some solid plans on getting everyone out of this hell hole.â
Iâve told them about you boys and theyâre real interested in you. After they see these schedules you copied down, Iâm sure they will want to induct both of you into The Peopleâs Republic.
