CHAPTER 23

After dinner Billy and Stephen hurried to the workers’ cabins. They were overflowing with excitement, knowing that when they told Joe all that they had accomplished that day he would be very happy with them. They found him, John, and Ken standing around the campfire in front of Kevin’s shack. The boys were both very proud of themselves and it showed on their grinning faces as they walked up to the campfire to talk to the older man.

“So what did you two do today?” Joe asked them.

“A lot.” Billy giggled.

“Are we going someplace more private to talk or should we do it here?” Stephen asked.

“I figured that we could take a walk around the encampment and stretch our legs a little. I could use a nice long, leisurely stroll after the day I’ve had,” Joe told them tiredly. As they edged off towards the fence Billy was still giggling.

“What has gotten into you?” Joe laughed. “You’re acting like the cat that just ate the last canary.”

“Wait till you see all of the information we gathered today,” Billy said proudly.

“So what have you got?” Joe asked.

“We have talked to a lot of people today,” Stephen began. “We checked the work schedules of all the guards and the staff and we found out where they keep all of the tools at night time.”

“We also got the key to the toolshed so we have access to it at any time,” Billy said still giggling.

“Wow you two have been busy!” Joe exclaimed. “Tell me what you know about the schedules.”

“We can do better than that.” Stephen smiled as he took some papers out of his pocket and handed them to Joe. “We wrote everything down so you could study it. We have copies of all of this back in our room so we can check the schedules everyday and compare them, then we will know if anything changes.”

“Writing anything down is dangerous!” Joe growled. He jerked the papers out of Stephen’s hand excitedly. Reading through them his anger dissipated quickly and he laughed. “This is the most information we have had since we got here. You boys have already done more to get these people out of here than me, John, and Ken has done in the six months that we have been in this awful place.”

He began earnestly studying the pages he took from Stephen. “With this kind of information we will be ready to move next week. I will make contact with my people on the outside tomorrow.” He laughed excitedly. “I will try to smuggle these papers out of the camp in the morning. I will leave them in a special place where my men on the outside will get them. They’ll look them over and let me know what they can do to help us. Then we can begin to make some solid plans on getting everyone out of this hell hole.”

I’ve told them about you boys and they’re real interested in you. After they see these schedules you copied down, I’m sure they will want to induct both of you into The People’s Republic.
